When I named this blog “Random musings, rambling opinions”, I was serious. So I bring you all kinds of interesting (hopefully) posts, ranging from how to secure your computer, to things about atheism, dinosaurs and now smartphone battery myths. Hope this helps someone!

Over just a few years, the batteries in our smartphones have changed a lot. That means those old tips to stretch out your battery life just aren’t as true as they once were, yet we still share them like they’re gospel. Before telling someone to disable Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, let’s shed some light on those old myths.

Technologically enhanced humans

Yesterday, The Register reported on a man who was physically assaulted at McDonalds in Paris for wearing computer assisted spectacles. He has a full account of the event, with photos taken by the computer assisted spectacles, on his own blog here. The exact reason for the attack on Dr. Steve Mann remains unclear but it is possible that the people there thought he was filming them and they objected to that. A special kind of idiot

Today, for some reason, we had a major power interruption here in the area. It didn’t take very long, only a couple of seconds, but it was long enough for one of our UPS’s to crap itself. And not just a little bit because in crapping itself it took with it a 3TB disk enclosure. Poof, just like that, all 12 disks showed orange LEDs, which is never a good sign.
