What personal data I collect and why I collect it
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site I collect the data shown in the comments form, and the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.
Contact forms
If you use the contact form located on the blog, you are required to enter a name, an email address, optionally a web site and the text you enter into the comment field. The contact form is used solely as a way to make contacting me easy. Any information you provide, is used only to provide me with a way to get back to you. Parts of your comment may be published on the site but always in an anonymised way and only when I feel it warrants a public response, unless you specifically ask that your comment be kept private. Your personal information will not be shared.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on my site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you have an account and you log in to this site, the website will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, the website will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
All cookies may be cleared by using the appropriate function in your browser. You are also free to block cookies but at the loss of functionality outlined above.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. I have no control over how the other website handles your personal information or over which tracking methods it uses.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Analytics
This blog uses several ways to analyze visits. This is done to create meaningful statistics, which in turn help me understand what people are looking for and what the most popular content is.
One of the methods used, are statistics generated by the WordPress Jetpack plugin. The privacy policy for Jetpack may be found here. This site used to use Google Analytics but this has been discontinued due to privacy concerns for you, the reader.
The second method of analytics is provided by the open source tool AWStats. Awstats doesn’t make use of tracking methods, instead it analyses log files created by the web server and creates summary reports from them. This summary may contain your public IP address and when that IP address contacted the web server.
Statistics are for my personal use only and are not shared.
Who I share your data with
I do not share personal data with anyone. The only exception to that would be when it is required by law, for instance in the process of a criminal investigation.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information. (Note: user registration is currently disabled so this does not apply).
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. See the section called “Comments” above for more information.

Additional information
How I protect your data
Since I do not collect any personal information about you, protection measures are simple. I use industry standard security measures, such as automated lock-out systems, monitoring for breaches, etc. Log in to the site requires the use of two-factor authentication. The web server uses modern encryption that received an A+ rating in the last SSL Labs test from Qualis.

What automated decision making and/or profiling I do with user data
The site is secured using monitoring systems that automatically lock out an IP address if it is found to be attacking the site. The offending IP address is logged.
