You may think it odd to find a discussion about arguments for the existence of God on my blog. Am I not explicit about being an atheist? I am not just going to discuss arguments for the existence of God here, I am also going to show you why these arguments don’t hold up when you examine them carefully. In order to do so, I am first going to explain how apologists use these arguments to defend belief in God. I will then discuss why each arguments fails or is flawed. I also do this to show visitors that I have given belief in a God serious thought, I didn’t simply dismiss it.
The arguments
There are many arguments that believers have offered over the years to justify their belief in a god. I can’t possibly hope to deal with all of them but I will discuss those which are heard most often. Here is a quick list of arguments for the existence of God that I plan to discuss. Click the link for an in-depth discussion of the argument mentioned:
- The ontological argument
This argument seeks to prove the existence of God through the use of logic alone. - The cosmological argument / first cause argument (Unfinished)
This argument seeks to prove the existence of God through the existence of the universe and everything in it. - The teleological argument / design argument (Unfinished)
This argument seeks to prove God through showing that nature shows signs of being designed by an intelligence. - The moral argument (Unfinished)
This arguments seeks to prove the existence of God through the existence of morality and sees God as the source of it.
Some of these arguments go back a long time but are still used today, sometimes with some variations. Apologists try to incorporate science in these arguments today to bolster their credibility. It’s important to remember the core arguments though. No matter how many scientific sounding terms are tacked onto these arguments, they don’t gain credibility to the attentive and critical thinker.
