Some people have a talent for asking the obvious. You probably know the type. You have an appointment to meet them and when you get there, they greet you with “Did you find it?” Well obviously I’m there, aren’t I? Or you come in soaking wet and they ask you if it’s raining. No, I just like to go outside, throw a bucket of water over myself and come back in. That’s just my thing. These are entirely superfluous questions that seem to serve no function and they puzzle me. How am I supposed to respond when some is asking the obvious?

This year, I will become 46 years old. If I’m lucky, this might be about half my full lifespan. And yet, sometimes I can’t help feeling old. This is especially true when I am talking with younger people. Just recently, I was at a gathering and we were talking about the change of the millennium. Someone remarked they were 10 years old at the time. Another hadn’t even been born yet. Me? At the time I was working as a sysadmin and was in London with a friend for the celebration. One of these people I actually held as a baby. Talk about feeling old!

Most people have a smartphone these days and a lot of them use a personal device both for work and in private. Lugging around two phones is a hassle so many people will opt to use their personal phone for work as well. The employer may even agree to pay your subscription for you. Unfortunately, to manage the phone and the data and apps on it your employer will most likely require you to enroll the device in their mobile device management solution of choice. That’s where the problem starts. Here’s why you don’t want an MDM policy on your personal phone.
